1940s: Joined the African National Congress (ANC) and co-founded the ANC Youth League, advocating for equality
1952: Opened South Africa's first black law firm with Oliver Tambo
1961: Became commander-in-chief of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC
1964: Sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage and other charges
1990: Released from prison after 27 years.
1991: Elected president of the ANC
1993: Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with F.W. de Klerk for their efforts to end apartheid
1994: Became the first Black president of South Africa
2013: Died at the age of 95
